FSEAP’s Mediation and Conflict Resolutions Service is a professional and confidential service designed to assist employees with resolving conflict in the workplace. Conflict is common occurrence but unfortunately, resolution can be difficult, especially if the parties involved have a personal stake in the outcome. Tempers can flare; hurt feelings can inhibit meaningful communication; people can say things out of anger and frustration that they may regret later. FSEAP offers mediation services to assist employees in resolving conflict in a respectful and productive manner.
Mediator’s Role Our mediator’s role is to guide employees through a problem-solving process in order to reach a mutually agreeable resolution. A mediator does not take sides, place blame or render judgement. Rather a mediator provides a safe, supportive, and confidential setting for open discussion of all critical issues, ensuring that solutions are negotiated and that outcomes are evaluated as fair and acceptable.
Benefits of Mediation Unresolved conflict can severely affect workplace communication, work performance, and employee job satisfaction, and as a result be costly in terms of lost productivity. The key benefit of mediation is bringing positive closure to conflict that employees have not been able to resolve on their own. As mediation relies upon the cooperation of the employees involved, a mediated agreement is also more likely to be respected. The mediation process also encourages those involved to develop the effective communication skills needed to resolve future issues on their own.
Situations in which mediation could be beneficial:
Co-workers unable to agree
Personal conflict in the workplace
Staff unable to collaborate
To defuse tension in a group
Two or more colleagues unable to work together
Business partners unable to agree on next move for the company.
